About Us

“Organize U.S. real estate records of all types from the past to the present for research and analysis.”

HistoricAerials.com a division of NETROnline.com is owned by Nationwide Environmental Title Research, LLC . (NETR). The parent NETR was formed in 1993 and is the brick and mortar entity that provides real estate research and information services nationwide. NETROnline was created in 1999 as an online gateway that organizes and provides access to property records.

The origin of HistoricAerials was the desire to travel seamlessly through time for any geographic spot in the United States to view recent and historical aerial photographs and maps. The distinction of this website and its technology is to provide remote sensing capabilities to position a given location through time on orthophotography and orthorectified maps. This allows for analysis, comparison, change detection, as well as identification, measurement, property layout, and obtaining geospatial coordinates of features that no longer exist.

Aerial photography has no equal when it comes to a factual record of the earth’s surface at a given moment in time. Because it provides data and a perspective that is otherwise elusive, there are applications in academic research, resolving legal disputes, tracking genealogy, planning real estate development, environmental due diligence and much more.

Formerly, historical aerial photography collections were stored in filing cabinets or containers and archived at federal, state, county and municipal offices, as well as warehoused by private organizations. Many times, these were flown at different altitudes and at irregular intervals. This lack of continuity was the fertile ground for the integration of geospatial and web technologies and spurred us to come up with innovative ways that aerial photography and orthorectified maps can be utilized.

Although, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) had been around for years, HistoricAerials was the first (or of any scale) to demonstrate the technology of layered historical orthophotography and modern orthophotography. Our collection is now approaching a petabyte and includes aerial photography, topographic maps and atlases, along with the ability to quickly display imagery of land and buildings throughout the United States. Ease of use, such as searching by address, landmark, or latitude and longitude coordinates to find geographic locations at various periods of time has never been so easy. The device immediately recognizes available orthophotography or maps at any geographic coordinate and scale (this is possible by drawing footprints of the imagery with bounding coordinates, which is entered into and accessed through a geospatial database). The various imagery and available years are then displayed by buttons that can be clicked to trek effortlessly through time for a given geographic coordinate displayed at the same registered scale.
